Interesting Facts You Never Knew About 5G Security Service

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

Index- In this blog, we have discussed the following:

  • Stability and security that 5G can provide

  • Types of 5G bands

  • Can 5G provide better security solutions?

5G SERVICES- a secured mobile network

The latest iteration of cellular technology, known as fifth-generation wireless (5G), is developed to speed up and enhance the responsiveness of wireless networks significantly. With 5G, wireless internet connections may enchant data at multigigabit paces, with apex rates advancing as high as 20 gigabits per second (Gbps).

Several network slicing, many service levels, and multiple network connectivity capabilities will all be provided by 5G. These technologies will be offered in virtual and containerized environments to enable flexibility, agility, and scale-related economies. For the sector, this represents an innovative method of operation.

Many security risks that now plague 4G, 3G, and 2G networks have been addressed by security measures included in 5G. Some of these controls include new mutual authentication capabilities, improved subscriber identity protection, and additional security measures. The opportunity to raise network and service security levels through 5G is unparalleled for the mobile industry. The deployment of new network technology poses possible new hazards for the industry, while 5G offers preventative methods to mitigate the impact of known problems.

The 5G infrastructure uses cutting-edge encryption to safeguard data traffic. Integrity-protected signaling is used by the devices and the network to verify each other's identities. This guarantees that even if one component is hacked, the others will still be secure.

Starting with 5G, the subscribers' long-term identity (IMSI) transmission is encrypted. This data is transferred via 2G, 3G, and LTE networks without being encrypted.

Authentication Confirmation is a novel mechanism that boosts roaming security. The subscriber's terminal device transmits cryptographic evidence of the mobile network operator's legitimacy whose network the terminal device has phoned back to. The current mobile networks do not support this function. Because security-related functions are conducted in the base station's central unit, there is less latency when moving about.

Location-based authentication of subscribers is identified by secure identity management systems; using this technique, only actual subscribers can access network services. It is built on top of the 4G system's already-existing security features and powerful cryptographic primitives.

Future versions of 5G will feature sophisticated 256-bit cryptography algorithms. This aims to guarantee that the algorithms employed in 5G networks are strong enough to withstand assaults from quantum computers.

Does 5G provide better security?

According to estimates, 5G technology will give mobile phones speeds of approximately 10 gigabits per second. People can stream several HD movies simultaneously and download a 4K HD movie in about 25 seconds, thanks to the 5G technology. The short response is "yes" when asked whether 5G security Services are superior to that 3G or 4G. Despite offering a fast internet connection, 5G technology still has some frequently disregarded drawbacks.

  • ANTI-TRACKING FEATURE OF 5G- The numerous anti-tracking and spoofing features that prevent unwanted actors from accessing sensitive data is the most important security benefit that 5G wireless network technology offers its customers. The 5G technology also ensures that less information is accessible by encrypting a larger volume of data than its predecessors, which deters cybercriminals from taking advantage of specific device connections. But because it's a new technology, it's still a good idea to make secure passwords to stop hackers from accessing gadgets.

  • CLOUD-ORIENTED SECURITY- Better monitoring made possible by 5G also makes it possible to spot attacks and vulnerabilities in the system more effectively. Additionally, as 5G technology was developed using a more software- and cloud-based approach, operators can practice a phenomenon known as "network slicing."

  • AUTHENTICATION AND ENCRYPTION- Other advanced security features, such as better integrity protection, authentication, and authorization methods, are also present in 5G. Thanks to this, users are better protected against hackers and their attempts to insert malicious devices into the network.

What are the 3 types of 5G services?

Businesses can strategically employ several 5G bands in their own private 5G networks to get around specific barriers and offer the best feasible service given the circumstances.

For instance, 5G networks can employ low-band frequencies for distant transmission before switching to the high band as soon as the signal gets nearer its source or destination.

Given the surroundings and distance from the source signal, 5G bands help avoid dead zones by transmitting signals at the best frequencies possible.

The 3 types of 5G services are-

  • Low Band 5G- Low-band 5G offers extensive coverage over a wide region by transmitting at frequencies between 600 and 700MHz. Despite having slower rates of about 50 Mbps, the low band gives the most coverage. Commercially, the low band offers nationwide coverage, while privately, it is used to facilitate business communication with remote task sites.

  • For instance, the energy sector uses low-band 5G to connect with far-off oil fields, mines, and wind farms. Future farms that employ intelligent sensors to keep an eye on their crops frequently rely on the low band when observing sensors at a distance.

  • Mid Band 5G- Generally, mid-band 5G broadcasts at frequencies between 1.7GHz and 2.5GHz, providing a good mix between coverage and speed. Due to its ability to cover wide swaths of suburbs and cities, the mid band is frequently used for 5G connection. Between 100 and 900 Mbps are possible in the mid-band. The mid band often outperforms or is at least as quick as your home internet, even at the slower end of these rates.

  • The mid band's blend of speed and coverage makes it fit for various uses. The mid band is crucial to the continued service of IoT devices, cameras, and end users in many business parks, campuses, and smart cities.

  • High Band 5G- The fastest speeds over short distances are provided by high-band 5G (mmWave), which works at 24GHz and above. Companies use the high band and densely inhabited areas to deliver the greatest 5G performance possible. High-band 5G typically offers 1 Gbps speeds, but it can be 10 Gbps in a controlled setting. To put things into perspective, a full-length high-definition movie could be downloaded at 1 Gbps in under a minute.
